HP Expands Recall Of Notebook Batteries

Comments Off

Hewlett-Packard is expanding a previously announced recall of Lithium-Ion batteries due to a fire and burn hazard.

The new recall involves 54,000 batteries, while the previous recall, in May 2009, involved 70,000 units. Since the 2009 recall, the company has received 38 additional reports of the batteries overheating and rupturing which resulted in 11 minor injuries and 31 incidents of minor property damage.

The recalled lithium-ion batteries are used with various HP and Compaq notebook computers. The CPSC News Release includes a chart (and corresponding photos) which contains all model numbers affected by the recall.

Consumers should remove the battery from the unit and contact HP to determine if it is affected by the recall. The AC adapter can be used to power the computer AFTER the battery has been removed. Consumers should only use batteries obtained from HP or an authorized reseller.

For more information, visit the HP Battery Replacement Program Web site or call (888) 202-4320.
